About Us

Gateways to the First World War is a centre for public engagement with the Great War centenary, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Our aim is to encourage and support public interest in the centenary through a range of events and activities such as open days and study days, advice on access to materials and expertise, and signposting for other resources and forms of support.

  1. Theatre of War: the only proper school of the surgeon.

    Event

    When Britain went to war in 1914, experienced surgeons were shocked at the wounds they saw.

  2. Business, government and the workplace: John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited, and the Great War.

    Project

    Working with the Thornycroft collection in the care of Hampshire Cultural Trust and Archives held by Southampton City Council Arts and Heritage.

  3. The Centenary of the Battle of the Somme

    Organised by Department for Culture, Media and Sport

    To mark the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 2016, a national commemorative event will be held at 12:00 (11:00 GMT) at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Thiepval Memorial in Northern France.

  5. The Somme 1916

    Event
    Organised by East Sussex County Council First World War Commemorations

    This concert marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme with music and poetry closely connected both to Sussex and to the battle.
