About Us

Gateways to the First World War is a centre for public engagement with the Great War centenary, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Our aim is to encourage and support public interest in the centenary through a range of events and activities such as open days and study days, advice on access to materials and expertise, and signposting for other resources and forms of support.

  1. Seminar: 'The Imperial War Graves Commission, Princess Beatrice and the grave of Prince Maurice of Battenberg' - Professor Mark Connelly

    Event

    Prince Maurice of Battenberg was the only direct member of the British Royal Family to be killed in the Great War. He was buried in the main city cemetery of Ypres in October 1914.

    Organised by East Sussex County Council First World War Commemorations

    A major exhibition called Crowborough’s War 1914-1918 will be held at the Beacon Academy School from Monday 22 October until Thursday 25 October.
