From Fact To Fiction: How the Real-life Stories of Cadbury Women Workers Inspired 'Comforts for the Troops'

The factory women at Cadbury in Birmingham made a phenomenal contribution to the First World War effort, parcelling gifts ('comforts') of chocolate and knitting for the servicemen abroad, as well as working voluntarily in the local auxiliary hospitals.

In this talk Fiona Joseph discusses how and why her research into the Bournville Archives inspired her to write a novel. She will also consider the joys and challenges of using real lives, places and events to shape a work of fiction.

Fiona Joseph is the author of the biography 'Beatrice: The Cadbury Heiress Who Gave Away Her Fortune' and the fact-inspired novel 'Comforts For The Troops'. She frequently gives talks about the background to her books at events in the West Midlands and further afield.
