‘Eve in Khaki’: Women and the British Army

The relationship between women and the army has changed frequently over time. Most recently in July 2016 the British Government accepted the recommendation of the Chief of the General Staff that the ban on female soldiers serving in frontline combat roles should be lifted.

Dr Lucy Noakes will look further back, tracing the history of women’s work with, and in, the British Army, with a particular focus on the First World War and the Second World War. Dr Noakes will show how the traditionally male space of the military has gradually, and sometimes reluctantly, adapted to changing gender roles in civil society.

Dr Lucy Noakes is a social and cultural historian at the University of Brighton, with specific interests in war, memory, gender and national identity.
